If you have booked me it is always a good idea to make sure you have sent me the following;
A simple map of the how to get to the school. Landmarks/ shops to turn by/ pubs/ churches to look out for, are all that are required.
If you can supply me with the postcode of the school that can help me to find you. I will usually be in your area the night before so I don't need a map from South Shields.
A rough Timetable of the day and any particular story/ themed story/ topic you would like to have included in the day. I have a lot of stories but I cannot conjure up some Nepalese story without warning.
An e-mail or a phone call to confirm that everything is OK for the day. I have been cancelled or had dates changed without warning in the middle of Leamington Spa so it makes sense just to confirm.
On the day it's a good idea to;
Have a carrier bag with five different classroom objects inside to use as a basis for making up a story.
Make sure that there are a number of breaks in between the story sessions so that I can get my head straight and be ready for the next group. If you have long corridors and I am moving from room to room please leave enough time for me to pack up, get to the next classroom and then set up again. I'm only human.
Make sure there is enough ventilation for the children and staff. 300 children in a stuffy hall or an unventilated, unused stock-cupboard can be a bit much for the children, and makes it difficult to deliver in an uncomfortable atmosphere of prehistoric rulers and blotting paper.
RELAX...... I know what I'm doing and I have a lot of experience of telling stories. I was a teacher and I know how to control children and I know what is expected of them. I don't take a lot of time to get ready to tell stories. A seat and a glass of water is all I need. ENJOY... Trust me I'm a storyteller.
