CD RELEASES

"WRITING FOR A PORPOISE"

Over the Summer Tony has written a number of songs about the writing process.

He has recorded them and they are a selection of easily remembered songs about punctuation ("It's a capital idea", similes (The rainbow song") , fulfilling the readers' needs ("Then I woke up and it wasn't a dream"), metaphors ("Make it clear m'dear what a metaphore might be") and "The apostrophe catastrophe blues".

The10 songs are aimed at all age ranges and meant to instill a sense of fun and understanding of what and how we write.

They are available by e-mail form the address at the bottom of the "Shop" page.

Tony has just released a double CD of 12 stories created with year 5-9 children as part of the Redcar and Cleveland folk festival in July of 2006. It has a great deal of material that can be used in the context of literature and PSHE lessons. If nothing else it can give children an idea of what a completed story sounds like and how to construct a story with a specific Beginning, Middle and End.

All of the stories were linked to the children's current topics of; Environment, Britain post WW2, Other cultures, Fantasy landscapes, Pop Groups and Mountains. Also included are 2 original, bonus stories by Tony, "Whatever is for us" and "To crow for the Farmer's dawn." In total the CDs run for just over two hours.

A collection of the stories written over 11 days this Spring with Nursery and Reception children in two schools in Manchester and North Shields has been released. There are over twenty stories inspired by the children's discussions with Tony. The stories are extremely quirky, funny, insightful and indicative of the concerns and understanding of very young children. They are definitely not 'Goldilocks and the three bears' but they were used to get the children to focus on resolution and description in a story.

Over the Summer Tony will be working with 8-13 year old children in the Cleveland area to produce a collection of stories based around Heritage sites in and around Redcar, Skelton and Whitby. The stories will be recorded and released later in the summer at the conclusion of the project.

A short Bibliography

by Tony Wilson

All children need to be exposed to a wide variety of stories and the familiarity of a repeated story can reinforce the component parts of a story; characters, plot, conflict, moral, denouement (final solution and unraveling of the story) and resolution. I personally would recommend;

Celtic fairy tales by Joseph Jacobs ( pub. Leopard or Bodley Head). A book that you can find in remaindered bins in bookshops, (£1.99) and has a wealth of folk tales that are not too familiar to children and adults. Always read the stories first, before you tell them to the children, as there are some tales that deal with sexuality and relationships.

British Folk Tales told by Kenneth McLeish (pub. Ginn 1984).

Johnny Reed's Cat by Kathleen Hersom, (pub. A&C Black, London). Good straightforward stories from the North-East, of good and evil and the tricking of witches and bad guys. Usually around train station bookshops.(£3.00)

The Giant book of Myths and legends edited by Mike Ashley, (pub. Paragon). Multi-cultural tales with familiar themes. The stories themselves are quite long and need to be read over a number of sessions. Nevertheless a good buy at £3.00 and a good book.

Myths from many lands by Roger Lancelyn Green, (pub. Purnell 1965). Very easily told stories with a wide multi-cultural approach. Perhaps not that easy to get a hold of but well worth the effort of contacting your local library and requesting it.

Tales of the British Isles by Kevin Crossley-HoIIand,(pub. Orchard books London and New York). A recognised authority on folk stories, told in an easily understood and easily read way. Again it is usually found in remaindered bins (£4.99).

A test of Truth retold by Barrie Wade, (pub. Ginn 1988 ). The story of Sir Gawain and the green knight told in an easily digestible language. Ideal and varied and could well be in the school library.

Volume 2 The way of the seeded Earth; The mythology of the Primitive planters: The North Americas. By Joseph Campbell, (pub. Perennial library Harper and Row New York). Joseph Campbell is recognised as the most influential analyst of folk stories and tales. In the middle of this studious work there are some fantastic stories which parallel Gulliver's Travels' and the creation myths of the Western cultures. In bookshops you can often find works about the native Americans which have great stories in them which are both astonishing and entertaining.

The list is endless. Margaret Mahy brings magical ideas to a real world that children can recognise. Having done a book week on her work I can highly recommend her stories.
