In a day at a school I would usually do 4 X 45-55 minute sessions to parallel year groups.

The groups can be up to 120 at a time with a few more if your school has a bigger class entry.

If you have a nursery class then I can do an additional 25 minute sessions for the morning and the afternoon nursery groups.

In each session I would play some music for the children to come into the area and to assess how well they can participate and listen.

I would tell an appropriate, age-specific traditional story which usually last for about 25-30 minutes. During that time the children will be participating in reply and answer dialogue, actions and part BSL signing. I am a firm believer in telling a story with children rather than at them.

There will be a period of standing up and sitting down in a 'Simon says' type of game. This helps the children to refocus on the second part of the session.

I would play a piece of music on the guitar or banjo and ask the children about what it reminds them of or where they might have heard similar music before.

In the second portion of the session we construct an age, content and vocabulary appropriate story using a random selection of everyday classroom objects. Through discussion we define what is needed to construct a linear, sensible and concluded story and the objects provide the stimulus for an orally constructed story.

Time permitting there is a question and answer session where the children can ask me any questions about writing, storytelling or perhaps aspects of their own writing which have proved to be problematical.
